On Memorial Day 2001, members of the 5th New York gathered at the grave of General G.K. Warren in Newport, Rhode Island, to honor the man whose skill and discipline forged "The Old Fifth" into a superb military unit. The floral knapsack is an exact replica of one placed on Warren's grave 113 years earlier by the 5th New York Veterans Association.
