This gray jean-cloth uniform, red kepi and fireman's shirt
and belt of the New York Fire Zouaves belonged to Frank Brownell, "Ellsworth's
Avenger." The first uniform issued to the unit was poorly made, and
by July 1861 the firemen were supplied with a blue version of Zouave garb.
