In "The Signal," painted in 1913 by Walter Otto Beck, 5th New York veteran John Tregaskis recreates an incident of the 1861 battle of Big Bethel, where the Zouaves were ordered to wear a white arm-band to help distinguish friend
from foe in the darkness. Tregaskis (1842-1919) was a native of Cornwall,
England, who in postwar years was a reporter for several New York newspapers.
He was also active in helping to plan the Fiftieth Anniversary commemorations
at Gettysburg in 1913.
