Lt. Col. Hiram Duryea (1834-1914), the third commander of the 5th New York, was a strict disciplinarian, nicknamed "Black and Tan" by the Zouaves who learned to respect this strident martinet. A brave soldier, he earned the respect of his subordinates. Duryea's family owned the largest starch works in the U.S., at Glen Cove, Long Island, and he was the driving force behind the regimental monument at Manassas.
